Dr. Anthony Fauci who is a Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases said that there are five or six things to be kept in mind to keep a check on the spread of the coronavirus during a webinar with the Brown School of Public Health. These things include universal wearing of a mask, physical distancing, avoiding crowds, outdoor better than indoor, washing your hands and hand hygiene and if possible, staying away from bars.

Dr. Fauci said that he won’t mind repeating these public health principles until he gets exhausted because these things do work. According to him opening up the country and wearing a mask should go hand in hand as one is the gateway to get to the other and not the enemy of the other.

He strongly believes that there is no need for complete lockdown if the things are done rightly. If things are done right then they can open up the economy, get the employment back, and get the people out of the doldrums of being locked down.

He expects everybody to fight Covid-19 together unitedly. He said that if everybody is pulling something at the same time than even one weak link in between won’t let you get to the end game. He wants everybody to go into the fall and the winter looking good and not thinking that they are going to have a catastrophe.

Dr. Jerome Adams acknowledged Dr. Fauci’s point of view and said that they need to adopt positive behavior rather than waiting for the vaccine. According to him, everybody should follow three W’s:

  1. Wash your hands.
  2. Watch your distance- meaning stay at least 6 feet from others and avoid crowded places.
  3. Wear a face mask.

Dr. Fauci explained that generally vaccines guarantee a certain level of protection but in the case of coronavirus, it won’t be like this. The efficiency rate of the vaccine that comes out can’t be said. So it will be better that people should follow the public health approach. People should treat vaccines as a tool to help make pandemic something well-controlled and no longer a pandemic.

According to him, there is control, elimination, and eradication of a disease. Till now smallpox is the only disease that has been eradicated. Polio and malaria are the diseases which have been eliminated in the United States and some disease which has been controlled to a significant level.

He said that with the help of good public health measures and vaccines there will be a possibility to bring this pandemic somewhere between good control and elimination.

Stay Safe. Stay Healthy. Stay Tuned.
